Moles are like opinions – everyone’s got them! The average person will develop 10-40 moles over the course of their lifetime. These moles may be “flat” moles or “raised” moles. Flat moles are like spots on the body that are colored differently than the rest of your skin (usually darker), whereas raised moles present as physical bumps on the skin that can be flesh colored, brown, or black. Both kinds are usually benign, but either could be dangerous in certain circumstances. Moles that are asymmetrical, discolored are more likely to be cancerous. This is especially true if your moles are changing in size or shape, as changes in your moles could indicate irregular activity in your skin cells.

Skincare after mole removal:
With many of our health conscious patients here at The Mole Doctor®, their skincare and grooming doesn’t just stop at mole removal. The phenomenon of “the skincare routine” is one that we are well aware of, and we want to help you take care of yourself after your mole removal treatment, too! What exactly does that look like, then? Well, the general emphasis is on keeping the treatment area very well protected. If the treatment area is well protected, it will heal properly and the scarring will be minimal, if any. If the treatment area is not well protected, then the treatment area could be disrupted and the potential scarring could increase.

One hair treatment that some of our patients sometimes seek after getting their moles removed is laser hair removal. Laser hair removal works by concentrating light into the melanin in the hair, which turns the light into heat, causing damage to hair follicles and causing hair to fall out. This treatment is generally safe to receive after our radiofrequency ablation mole removal, but it’s important to remember that any treatment should avoid the treatment site. If this is a situation that you’re in, don’t forget to tell your hair removal specialist to avoid your treatment area so you can heal properly. An exception to the safety of laser hair removal, though, is on dark-skinned patients. Since melanin is the pigment that causes skin to darken, laser hair removal can target the melanin in skin and cause hypopigmentation, which would “lighten” the skin on the specified area.

Electrolysis is another treatment that some people look to for hair removal. It works by inserting a wire into the patient’s hair follicles and sending an electrical current down the wire, thereby destroying the hair follicles. Electrolysis consists of a series of treatments that can run for up to a year and a half. By the end of this year and a half, your treatment area should be fully healed and ready to undergo electrolysis treatment, so if you have an appointment tomorrow and are worried that you won’t get that area treated, you can simply delay treatment of that specific area for a future appointment.

Finally, facials are another common treatment used for skincare that patients will naturally wonder if they can get after mole removal. Facials come in a variety of forms, but they all generally consist of some form of treatment being applied to the face. This is another case in which the treatment area must be protected. For example, the treatment area needs to be protected from water, so any heavily water-based procedure should not impact the treatment area. However, if none of the moles you got treated were on your face, you should be good to go for the facial that you’re looking forward to!
